Lori and I recently returned from an incredible whirlwind adventure to Nepal, filled with eye-opening experiences and moments of deep connection.
In this post, I am sharing some reflections on our journey, particularly our time helping those on the medical mission. You may also like the video related to this post.
Our travels began with the bustling city of Kathmandu, which was a mix of chaos and beauty. There were moments when flights were delayed or didn’t show up, but this kind of traveling has a way of teaching you patience and resilience. Like anything else, you go with the flow and embrace the unexpected or let it become a cause for upset.
Medical Mission in Taksindu
We found ourselves in Taksindu, known for its serene monastery. It was an inspiring day as we treated around 280 people as part of our medical team. My colleague Gretchen and I worked diligently to provide yoga therapy to over 60 individuals per day.
The organization of our efforts was impressive. Patients were transported to see us from miles away in jeeps along bumpy roads. Our dedication meant we didn’t turn anyone away, even working late into the evening to ensure all who needed assistance were attended to.
During our time there, we collaborated with various medical professionals, including ear and eye specialists, neurologists, rheumatologists, and….dentists (Lori’s specialty).
Finding Connection Through Movement
One particularly memorable encounter was with a monk who had just completed a remarkable seven-month meditation retreat. His joy and peace were palpable, and he eagerly shared his artistic sketches with me. The monks were bright, multilingual individuals who soaked up our approach to therapeutic yoga.
The Concept Of Self Care
As I reflect on this journey, I recognize the importance of self-care, even while on the go. Even 20 to 30 minutes can bring profound benefits.
But for the Nepalese, the concept of self-care is missing. How do you care for your teeth without floss and a toothbrush? How would you know to put your legs up the wall and have a few healing shapes if your entire day evolved around farming to sustain you and your family? I get the feeling that any downtime is spent in prayer and sleep. My lesson? I’ll not take the creature comforts of yoga and self-care for granted. What gift to share with them and plant the seed for us all.
Despite the challenges of altitude, cold weather, and cloudy days, the experience was a gift. Each day brought us new insights and opportunities to connect deeply with the community around us.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our journey in Nepal. Your support means a lot, even if by closing your eyes for a moment and sharing a thought of love and gratitude for all.
Namaste 🙏🏻 ✨❤️
