Avita FAQ
Online Practice
Yes! Click here and watch three short videos that explain Avita Yoga and how we obtain results with simple practice. After watching the third video, click through to the Introductory Series 1.0. Jeff will guide you through a 45-minute class to increase hip and shoulder freedom. You will be asked to create an account for the fourth free video, which is easy and can be canceled at any time.
Replay videos are available online 24-7. Within Replays, you may:
- Click on Categories and scroll down to the class category you want to take.
- Choose a playlist and begin your healing progression.
- Search for a class that addresses your area of concern.
- You may also find a workshop that targets your problematic area.
Upcoming classes are available at pre-scheduled times and require the all-access practice pass.
In the numbered Series Playlists, Jeff practices and teaches simultaneously, which is the preferred way for most to practice with him online.
In the lettered playlists, he teaches students in a classroom setting and off-camera at times, assisting a student who does not appear on the screen. You may hear him talk to various students, and sometimes his words might apply to you, but not always. Each video class is designed to be practiced with your eyes closed, listening to and applying the cues to your body and mind. Periodically, you may glance at the screen the same way students look around the room to see that they are interpreting the cues correctly.
Yes, at its best, Avita is a series of shapes and classes that guide you to and through the deepest layer of your body: your joints and bones. Each unique class builds on the previous one, but they do not become more difficult. It’s not about “accomplishing” the shape and working harder but rather about allowing it to work for you.
Joints mend, the pain diminishes, and the soft tissues naturally reorganize with practice. You may search for classes or workshops that address your particular concerns. Still, students are encouraged to pick a series (1.0 is recommended to start) and follow along sequentially to obtain the best results.
There’s never a need to push or advance the shape. Avita is not performance-based, and perfection is never required. The “right” approach to any shape is the one that brings the restriction to awareness. Observed from within without judgment, the shape and your healed mind go to work for you. We practice for the result, and the results inspire us to practice.
When in doubt, reduce pressure or time. Your body cannot heal under stress; while the practice relies on compression, it should never cause duress. The primary skill we learn as we go is to discern between pain and healing sensation. Pushing into pain is meaningless; dropping into healing sensation is everything. The primary skill you will learn is how to distinguish the difference.
Tightness means limited movement, which often leads to arthritis, degeneration, and pain. We use shapes to find and resolve these rigid areas of the body. When we get caught up in accomplishing the shape or getting it right, we tend to work around the problematic areas. In Avita, we slow down and target the troublesome areas, which is what the shape or movement is for.
Avita works primarily on fascia to dissolve restrictions in and around the joints. Resolving restrictions locally has a resonating effect throughout the rest of the body. Movement begets movement. Blood flow increases, bringing nourishment to the cells while removing damaging toxins.
Practice Avita with your doctor’s approval and after completing any recommended physical therapy. We will work to refine the movement and pick up where PT leaves off. We will unwind compensatory patterns that may have contributed to the surgical need in the first place. Bring any questions or concerns to Jeff in a private session; he will find a helpful protocol for you to follow.
Avita Yoga can delay or postpone surgery if you identify and address the problem early. Conversely, it can help you prepare for joint replacement surgery once the decision is made.
Like most, you will want to continue practicing when traveling. Travel with simple props like a bolster, mat, and strap, if possible. But once you get a feel for the practice, it’s easy to occasionally substitute with a firm pillow, belt, and blanket for a mat. Practice when you can. A little goes a long way when traveling. Your steady practice will be waiting for you at home.
Avita Props
Not much. Many are often able to find substitutes for the materials we recommend, such as a firm cushion for a bolster or a scarf for a strap. Eventually, you will want to make a small investment in good materials. CLICK HERE for details.
